VINTAGE CLASSIC '64 HANSEN LONGBOARD

Me to the craigslist person selling this board => "You are trying to sell this board right? What about some rocker shots, perhaps a fin shot. I mean you went through the trouble to shoot the thing anyway. You are asking $1000." My buddy Phil of SLIDERS brought this to my attention:
"Very nice classic, bought 5 years ago from the original owner. He is local to La Jolla and ordered this board in '67 even though I have been told it has a '64 fin. I guess that's what he wanted. The board was stored in his garage for ever, right at WINDANSEA. Has some sand wear on the fin from dragging. Deck shows dirty due to wax. Measures 9'10", 21 1/2" and 16" a foot from the nose and tail. Has original repairs to the nose, tail and 3 small rail dings. But still is very, very clean. Nearly no sun damage. Very classic off center triple orange pin line. And dbl redwood stringer with blue glue lam. Also triple cardiff logos. email surfpch@gmail.com"

Velzy on craigslist

My buddy Phil of slider's sent me this. I don't know anything about the logo. Here is how the description reads: "Vintage 1960 signed Dale Velzy Longboard (Oceanside)
I'm selling a professionally restored 10 foot longboard, signed by (above glass with a sharpie) Dale Velzy, during his 75 birthday party celebration. I originally purchased the board from the store manager at The Longboard Grotto in June of 2004, 11 months before Velzy's death, at age 77. This board has documented history and was restored in Hawaii by respected surfboard shaper, Randy Rarick. It was originally purchased in California in 1960 ... eventually living off the Oregon coast before making it's way to Hawaii. The wooden "pig" fin is original, as with the "wedge" (wider at the nose and tapers to the tail) stringer. Randy found an original unused laminate that matched the original laminate exactly. The board is in immaculate condition without dings or scratches. Call to discuss price. (760) 583-6268 and ask for Randy"

Ross's craigslist SCORE!!!

My buddy Ross of Ventura finally sent me his BING pix. NICE!!! here they are and here is the story: "There are plenty of before & after photos from the restoration process, complete with captions that give you an idea of what was going on. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2047466&id=3600444&l=003fa67645
As for backstory, I bought the board from a fellow in Newbury Park (my hometown) who was short on cash and looking to remove some junk from his side yard. At the time the board appeared to be in poor shape so I gave him a couple hundred bucks and figured I'd fill
the nose or something and just ride it as a beater log. As I did some ding repair, however, I noticed that the glass job was solid (no delam) and there was clean foam under & around most places. The light blue paint appeared to be after-market so I sanded off a layer only to find yet ANOTHER layer of blue hotcoat (also aftermarket) and the massive bing "eye" on the bottom. A little more sanding revealed the near-pristine white foam underneath so I decided to restore the entire board as much as possible. Bruce Collings of Malibu was kind enough to rebuild the nose with a new Balsa stringer-extension and foam chunks from an old junk board. Other shark bites were attended to and after a final hotcoat seal around the rails, she was back in action!"

SUPER RAD!!
Bing wrote me the following information concerning Ross' board:

"Hi Mike,
I've been enjoying your blog. It's nice to see all the current interest in Pig shapes. Your friend's board #4126 was ordered by a Bing Team Rider Bill Livingston on 4/23/65. See attached PDF "Birth Certificate".
Bing"I love the fact that BING is this organized!

Pontificate and Craigslist

We have been super stoked over here in my neck of the woods. Great surf for the second part of last week. Yesterday was thick with kooks (especially bardzillians!) but still there were beautiful waves to be found. I have been riding various pig shape boards. My current sled is keeping me well entertained.

I am beginning to feel the differences in design elements between pig shapes. May you find yourself in the pocket on the nose or on the rail.

Below is a craigslist post I thought nice. The price is ABSURD but the board looks NICE!

Vintage Wardy 1960 surfboard

"Very Nice Wardy 9.0 this board is part of my personal collection and is not easy to part with. It is a true 60's board, A Wardy like this, in this condition is very hard to come by.  It has never been reconditioned and has a small amount of wear. Small amount of delameinating on the stringer some normal yellowing of foam."

Used Hobie pigs!

craigslist has some nice pigs every now and again. I just wish people would take proper pictures!

60s CLASSIC HOBIE SURFBOARD

"Here is a classic original owner 9' 4" HOBIE longboard. Last used around 1980. Has 1" single redwood stringer and tail block. Sloid wood original skeg. Early Dana Point decal. Purchased around 1963-1965 if my memory serves me right. Seems like cost was around $100 - $125! Serial number is 19617, which I think is a fairly early number. Has the usual dings some of which need to be repaired, but it's in better shape than most I have seen from this era. The blank has yellowed, but it's a nice mellow yellow! This was my second surfboard, the first one my dad and I made in our garage in 1961 with a clark foam blank from Abe Schuster Fiberglass in Oakland. I sold my woodie wagon, some years ago, but could not part with this great old board at the time. Now it's time to set it free!"

Pig in Houston!

I'm in Houston visiting family right now. I thought I'd search around to see what Houstonians had in the way of the Pig. Here is what I found:
"What we have here is a vintage Sea King longboard popout. It measures 10' with a 2" redwood stringer and a glassed in redwood fin! I believe she is a '64, but no later than a '66. She has a few minor dings, but overall, she is beautiful and ready for the beach."

SUPER NICE!!
